The Day Richmond Rocked!

What a day Saturday 5 May turned out to be!

With streets and the Market Place closed to traffic, the town decked in blue and yellow and shop windows decorated for the occasion, Richmond welcomed Day 3 of this year’s Tour de Yorkshire.

The atmosphere was terrific as crowds gathered in Richmond to see the start of the Market Towns Men’s Race that would end on Scarborough’s seafront.

The hot sunny day was perfect for the spectators, many of whom stayed on to enjoy the activities organised to extend the day’s celebrations on into the late evening.

Food stalls in the Market place and Friary Gardens had a busy day and included RBTA members Neeps and Tatties, Angus Morton Butchers and the Estate Café..

There was ‘Fun Stuff’ for kids in the Friary Gardens and the Minster FM Stage in the Market Place kept crowds entertained throughout the day and into the evening with local groups and bands including Fourum, The Messengers and B’Chic.

Many thanks to Phil Upton, the RBTA Membership Secretary, and his team for organising the Richmond Rocks Cycle Festival Event! Also, to partners ProPharma Group, Purple Creative and John Blenkiron’s – three local businesses - and to Richmondshire District Council and Richmond Town Council for supporting the day.

Jamie Chilton, General Manager of Richmond’s Kings Head Hotel commented:

“I felt that the way the town embraced the event was simply superb. Not only was the atmosphere incredible, but a lot of hard work and organisation within the town ensured that lots of local businesses benefitted from the huge crowd which was captured into remaining in the square till late into the night. It was great to see such a great variety of food and drink on offer, almost all of which was supplied by local businesses and not your usual pop up vendors who supply these large events at highly marked up prices!”
